New Urban Forms

There are many possibilities for development of the land along the rail corridor, which spans central Singapore from north to south. How about new living spaces? Preservation of the greenery? Introduction of a railway-centric theme for new developments?

How can future developments be shaped and integrated with greenery to create a differentiated rail corridor experience? We invite your suggestions on what should be done to optimise this opportunity!

Suggest how and what development could be carried out along the rail corridor.

  1. Interstates bus station to Malaysia

Currently, there are buses leaving to Malaysia from Lavender Street Terminal. That can bring our image down for tourist who arrives from Malaysia. However, I would like to suggest URA to convert the train station into a bus hub. It will bring more historic for tourists and reminds Malaysian and Singapore when they arrived in Singapore. As this is part of Malaysian building and land in the past, why don't we change the mode of transportation on the same building. Other than that, we could construct an eco courtyard for passengers to wait for their bus.

    • Maintain Residents' "Desire Lines"

Currently there are many tracks that cut from neighbouring estates / commercial buildings down on to and across the rail line to allow people to take the easiest route between two points.

These "desire lines", as they were coined by urban planners in the 1950s, should be preserved and upgraded during the development of the rail corridor PCN, as they are already the optimum method of transiting on to the line. Such paths are almost impossible to plan ahead of time, as people will ultimately walk / cycle their desired route.

An example of a city that respected its residents'…

      • Introduce community urban farming

        (submitted by Ms Laraine)
In my dissertation for my masteral course in NUS; I included the rail land within Bukit Merah Estate as possible areas to introduce community (urban) farming. The long stretch of greens not only enhance the corridor but can also be a beneficial source of local vegetables. You plant what you eat!:)

        • Green People Powered Transport Corridor

Singapore lacks a green (people-powered) transport corridor, and it lags behind many other countries in this respect. This north-south link can form the backbone of a new transport network based on cycling, rollerblading and walking, which can be gradually expanded with links to all the housing estates. Infrastructure such as secure bicycle parks, showers, lockers, rental facilities (as works so well in Paris, Barcelona, New York) together with local adaptions such as rain shelters and maybe even taxi trishaws and electric vehicles, can be made along the park at important nodes. A 19th-century technology transport corridor can be replaced with…

          • Make it part of the islandwide Park Connector Network

The north-south orientation of the rail corridor compels the building of a connector that could link areas as diverse as the Woodlands Waterfront to the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, and to the city. This would then encourage ecological literacy, environmental recreation and a shift in transport use. PCN Kiosks could be built to facilitate green movement via bicycles. Surrounding schools, companies and estates could adopt strips of the corridor, and use it for place-based education, community service and so on. The short-term (yes, you read that right) and easy solution would be to 'develop the land according to its value'…

              • Create a Bicycle Highway

Bicycle Highway can be found in many countries in Europe. In recent years, there are also plans to build such bike highways in California.
Bicycle Highway differs from PCN in the sense that the lanes are wider and there are more than one lane in both directions. This allow faster cyclist to overtake and allow casual cyclist to cruise on the slower lane . Another feature that can be considered to a bike highway is to have entrance/exit points at every X km (example 3km) so as to minimize the disruption of incoming traffic for long distance travellers.
                With the…

                • Build cycling paths and connect them to MRT stations

(Submitted By Mr Kum Kin Meng)

I have walked the whole entire stretch of the railway. I noticed that some parts are quite near certain MRT stations such as Bouna Vista; Holland V station. It would be good that certain cycling paths can be made and connected to these stations. maybe bicycles can be rented at these stations.

                  • MRT or LRT lines

Maybe we can study the possibility of converting it to double storey MRT or LRT lines in some session of the track e.g., Red Hill, Telok Blangah to Tanjong Pagar where there are more commutators traffic to and from City. This will ease the traffic problem. Anyway, there are already track space available. We can keep other parts of the track for leisure use.

                    • Go Underground while preserving nature

Preserve the pristine greenery on top and build underground is a way to justify the economic value of the area as well as to maintain the natural biodiversity attraction.

Multi tier tunnels can be developed to allow shopping corridor/art/parade corridor (level -1), new MRT Line (level -2), new expressway (level -3), and evacuation centre for public (level -4). The lowest part could serve as a buffer space in case there is a heavy rain islandwide thus preventing flooding. The water accumulated then can be channelled to the industrial park nearby.

Along the greenery, it can be built bird aviary, habitat…

                      • City leisure park

                        (submitted by Mr Chong)

Create a city leisure park with shopping centre and lush greenery around Tanjong Pagar Railway Station. Also to build one more MRT Station (between Harbour Front & Outram) around this area for more vibrancy. Environmental and Human Comfort must be the priority to ensure a successful leisure park.

                        • Connector town

                          (submitted by Mr Bryan Sim)
For years the bt timah nature reserve and railway acted as a divider separating the people of the east and west part of singapore. This has led to a sad and disunited reality for Singapore; turning Singaporeans into two camps of "East" and "West" and their associated bias. Build a connector town.

Pls keep to the original purpose we fought so hard for. My suggestion: do whatever that is worth the effort and $billions we've spent getting it back; pleeeeeese!!

                              • Unlock value but preserve the open space

Allow a higher development potential (plot ratio) of the land to be transferred to adjoining properties, without touching the rail corridor, which would be vested as a linear public park. This will allow the govt to unlock the value of the land through development charge and/or a special "rail corridor" levy without losing the possibilities for public space and recreation.

I remember Kampong Fatimah that used to hug the coastline at Mandai Mangrove adjacent to the railway line.
Perhaps 'kampong' style housing can be developed in the same area but outside the mangrove forest. This development should be available for booking to the public as a recreational space - very much like holiday chalets.

                                    • Mixture of old and new

                                      (submitted by Mr Gunalan Marimuthoo)

I'll like the railway station to be converted to a "lively" museum cum fine dining; plenty of cafeterias; restaurants and a space for world-reowned clubs/pubs - it'll be fun to see a mixture of the old and the new yet retaining the colonial architecture of the station.

                                      • Residential estates in nature reserve

(submitted by Mr Thomas - suggestion extract)

Removal of the tracks and bridges all along the line is good; I can see many areas where residential housing can be build among the big green lung that is the nature reserve...

                                        • Use water to activate the space

Be it small areas of wetlands or connections to current canals or a whole new river, it could consolidate Singapore's vision of our ABC waterways and enrich the lifestyle options of residents along the track.
