Community Space

The opening of the rail corridor to the public saw Singaporeans thronging the tracks – and a surprising amount of socialising between walkers! What can be done to make it a community space for everyone?

How can we make the rail corridor a space for people to hang out?

  1. Connect to Sungei Buloh Nature Reserve

Nearest Towns to Sungei Buloh Nature Reserve (SBNR) is Yew Tee or Marsiling. However, it has to go through Sungei Kadut which has now heavy traffic due to Workers' dormitory. It will be nice to have park connector built to link from the Green corridor to SBNR so that residents can enjoy going there safely.

    • Pets corner

A pets' corner! A place where we can bring our pets (cats or dogs) to mingle and roam free. Could perhaps look into opening a cat cafe along the stretch as well.

        • Memorial benches and community gardens

          (submitted by Mr Gouri Mirpuri)

Both my ideas are related to using the corridor to help Singaporeans feel more connected to their land, to their country, to their home. Instead of the government CREATING something (walkway/park land/cycling paths etc) and handing over the finished product to the people, my idea is for the people to participate in the shaping of these areas. Much more meaningful and impactful, I would think.

Loved ones are remembered throughout the world by donating "in memorial" benches in their names. Sometimes there are lovely messages on the benches too. These are placed…

          • Ease access of nearby community to the Special Interest Areas

Since two of the designated key activity nodes are Former Bukit Timah Fire Station and the Bukit Timah Railway Station, we need to ease access of nearby communities to these key activity nodes.

I suggest building a direct access from the hill top of Hume Avenue linking down to the iron truss bridge at Upper Bukit Timah Road. This helps to bring nearby communities across the Upper Bukit Timah Road to both key activity nodes.

Another ramp could connect Hillview Road up to the Rail Corridor. This will also effectively link the Rail Corridor with the Park Connector Network.

            • Incorporate a continuous element for singaporeans to lay down an item which captures their stories

              (submitted by Mr Andrews)
Incorporate a continuous element; like a wall comprising of boxes allowing EVERY Singaporean to lay something down - e.g. artifacts or stories; like a national diary - so as to physically manifest the subtle net of life; allow exploration of humanity; and accurately capture the story of us.

There are potentials for this old camp to be revived for public use such as a farmers’ market, horticultural showrooms, eateries and even as a Northern Hub for the Rail Corridor.

                • Plots of land as gardens, night market

                  (submitted by Mr Ryan Lim)

                  I would like to suggest:
                  1. Few sites (i.e. including a little stretch of railway track) should be kept and form a park/garden with some eating house around the track. Keep as history and tourist spot.
                  2. Convert a stretch to night market with kiddy ride to replace existing mobile night market.

                    • Refrain from building any new major structures

The thing that strikes me most whenever I go by the DNA bridge near the Marina Bay Sands resort is that nine times out of 10, the FLoating Platform is completely UNUSED. In fact, I think it is used for at most a collective total of one month out of twelve in a year.

The Straits Times report on the Rail Corridor states that 4 activity nodes and 2 special interest areas have been singled out for special attention. I worry that the plans would include the construction of PERMANENT activity/event areas that are used at most, very infrequently, much…

                      • keep the turfing

as i said in the recreation section, i think the turfing is beautiful. keep at least some section of it (the bukit timah station is a good choice as it is wider and has shelter) where people can have picnics, community gatherings etc in this space. it keeps it green without losing the community and heritage value of the corridor and its surroundings. people can hang out in spaces other than marina barrage or the coast parks.

                            (submitted by Mr B Singh)

Organise major family fun-runs; biathlons etc along the green corridor. It's far healthier for our children & families to excercise amongst the trees than along the roadside. It'll also be less disruptive to traffic in the city. & Make a sculpture garden along e route & a place for group gatherings.

I would also suggest that the trail to feature food spots and a good place would be at Bukit Timah Station. There; the station can be redeveloped into a place where people can stop; rest; recharge with good food.
