A Recreational Corridor

Paintball? Paddling pool? Pop-up shops? Petting zoo?

  1. Create an island wide bike link

(submitted by Dr Goh Wah Ing - suggestion extract)

Make it part of a bike link between east, west & northwest Singapore to encourage cycle commuting:
Link the Tanjong Pagar end to East Coast Park via Gardens by the Bay & Marina Barrage by a park connector. The space beneath the elevated section of the AYE could be used for part of this connector, just like the park connectors beneath the MRT tracks near Tampines & Simei. This would encourage cycle commuting and help reduce the number of cars entering the financial district. Build facilities for cycle commuters to park…

    • Not just Fun, but the RIGHT kind of Fun.

Before we can decide what recreational activities are appropriate for the rail corridor, we first need to be very clear what we want the Rail Corridor to be, primarily.

The value of the Rail Corridor is not just its uninterrupted connectivity. If it is merely connectivity, then connectivity for what purpose? If it is to allow people to travel conveniently along its route, then we ALREADY have that in terms of the MANY roads that already serve that purpose.

The REAL value of the Rail Corridor is that it is a GREEN corridor, one that allows us the opportunity to…

        • Create a Bicycle Highway

Bicycle Highway can be found in many countries in Europe. In recent years, there are also plans to build such bike highways in California.
Bicycle Highway differs from PCN in the sense that the lanes are wider and there are more than one lane in both directions. This allow faster cyclist to overtake and allow casual cyclist to cruise on the slower lane . Another feature that can be considered to a bike highway is to have entrance/exit points at every X km (example 3km) so as to minimize the disruption of incoming traffic for long distance travellers.
          With the…

          • Railway Drasine Cycling

The track could be relaid in Standard Gauge and ^cycle-drasines placed along the line for rental by users. This could provide an alternative to cycling and would be unique compared to other cycling areas such as those at the NParks areas.

            • Cycling/ Jogging Track

SIngapore has a very unique one off chance to provide a dedicated cycling; running; jogging and walking track. Stations can be used as food and beverage stations. It could be world class and green in design. Solar powered night lighting; ecological facts along the path etc.

              • Bicycle Tracks with existing greenaries preserved

We can encourage more exercise among the Singaporeans and reduce traffic congestions at the same time if it can be turned into Bicycle tracks with existing greeneries preserved. These bicycle tracks encourages commutation to and fro the city(Tanjong Pagar) in pleasant morning and evening surrounded by fresh greenery and air. Completed with bicycle parking spaces, small stretch of shades from sun and rain.

                • Definitely a cycleway and footpath.

A bike path and walkway the length of the railway line. This is simple to implement and really needs no other amenities along the way. It wouldn't encroach on the exisiting jungle and its wildlife. It is an easy track so whole families would use it often. It would be a shame not to utilise such a wonderful asset!

                  • Create a continuous track in the interim

While plans are being made for development of the rail corridor, we can perhaps create a continuous asphalt track in the interim. With an available track, people will be encouraged to jog, cycle and visit the rail corridor, thus increasing its visibility and accessibility.

With the increased public awareness and usage, we can then make plans that will be beneficial to a larger audience.

The interim track can be modified into the future for a permanent park connector, or to allow developments to grow up around it. The important thing now is to first create a continuous path, so that…

                      • keep the turfing!

i think the turfing is beautiful. keep at least some section of it (the bukit timah station is a good choice as it is wider and has shelter) where people can have picnics, community gatherings etc in this space. it keeps it green without losing the community and heritage value of the corridor and its surroundings.

I agree with Ms Lam Wei Ting.
One idea that I have in mind for the green corridor, is a giant park connector that incorporates the structure of the rails into the park connector itself. Examples:
                          1. Have plants growing in the spaces between the rails.
                          2. Instead of having just a park connector running on the surface beside the rails, have some paths that go lower into the ground and cut across the rails, so that people will have a unique view of the rails from below.
                          3. I noticed that the bridge over Bukit Timah road near the…

                            (submitted by anonymous)

How about converting it into a open bazaar; lined up with hawker foods. Something we unique and nostalgic. I would love to see lined of the good old days street hawkers (of course well watered for hygiene). I think we have enuf of modern mall; shops and which tourist are not excited to visit.

                              • convert it into park for locals and tourism place to be.

I would suggest the govt body try to convert the 26km of railway track into a sightseeing train/cycling/jogging track to let local or visitor to take the train from woodland to tanjong pagar vs verse and beside the railway we can grow more flower and fruits tree or make it into a park. In this case we can retain the rain forest as well as letting local enjoy the peacefulness and scenery of the 40 yrs piece of valuable land and memories.

I really like the photos shown in URA's website on Promenade Plantee. Wish our railway track can be turned into something like that, not only providing a fantastic breakaway for Singaporeans, but it will definitely serves as a tourist attractions.
A bicycle track is a must, though, as it is too challenging to walk for the whole track.

                                    • Above Ground Marathon Route

All future developments are to follow part of an Aerial Plan to provide a public connected space above ground. It can be like Duxton plain housing jogging track; but loner and fully public accessible. It can be the world's highest man-made marathon route where the air is fresher and the view unbeatable.

                                      • Set up a Landscape school along the corridor

Set up a landscape and garden design school teaching short courses, workshops and professional courses.

Have an area set aside for regular garden competitions for all, run it like Chelsea flower shows or international garden festivals.

                                        • Easy accessibility from any point along the Track

It is important that people are encouraged to hop on their favourite bike and join in the bicycle track at any point along the track. There is no point to have only a few entrance and exits along the track, to which people need to take public transport to.
